To help you get in the mood, we’ve put together some decorating tips you can use on any member of the squash, or Cucurbitaceae, family.
To get started
- You can use any member of the amazing squash family. A strangely shaped pumpkin or squash can be a great base to start with.
- Gather up some natural decorating materials from outdoors (leaves, pine cones, etc.) or search through your recycling bin for some arts-and-crafts treasures. You don’t need to buy all kinds of decorations.
A little inspiration
- Take inspiration from the shape of the squash or pumpkin and transform it into an animal, a character or a weird and wonderful object!
- You can use pretty patterns that don’t represent anything in particular to decorate your work of Halloween art.
- You can also send a message or illustrate a favourite theme with your artwork.

Pro tips
- Use acrylic paint if you want to add extra colour to your creation.
- Use straight pins to attach things to your squash or pumpkin.
- Use a hot glue gun to glue stuff to it.
- Use a leather-cutting knife to carve designs.
- Last, don’t cut right through your squash or pumpkin. If you do, it’ll soon start rotting.
